This brand is named for it's founder, Don Jaime Partagas, who began manufacturing cigars in 1827, but put his own name on his line of cigars in 1845. After his death, the brand passed to Ramon Cifuentes in 1889 and was owned by Cifuentes y Cia. prior to nationalization, earning a mention by name in English novelist Evelyn Waugh's 1945 work, Brideshead Revisited. Partagas cigars also won gold medals in at least three international expositions between 1867 and 1884. There is no doubt about the strong, intense flavour of this line and it is still produced in the Partagas factory, renamed Fernando Perez after nationalization. The range is immense and it would be hard for a smoker not to find a Partagas which fits his or her interest in size or shape. Buyer beware: the 8-9-8 selections vary greatly in size and strength; identification is made by whether the box is varnished or not.

Review notes: When I inspected this cigar, I could see the dark ligero taking up half the blend at the foot, so I knew it would be tasty. The wrapper is an even medium brown and the feel is just slightly spongy, despite being box pressed. I picked up some cedar and hay/straw flavors and also a noticable fruitness of cherry or plum. I think this was the ligero in the blend. This cigar had a medium-full taste to start, but got fuller during the smoke. Flavors of cedar and white pepper were prominent the entire time. Toward the end, the white pepper changed to a more robust black pepper taste. The cigar is only 11 months old, and should mature into a more complex smoke after a few years of aging. A good, short Partagas.

Review notes: True Parti flavor to this cigar, I feel it will turn out very well with a few years of aging. It's very strong at the time, and it is box pressed so it has a tight draw but it feels more open then the Presidente. All in all it is a nice cigar, it's not near the top five in Partagas family but it feels like it is a contributing member. If you are monogamous to the Partagas brand you'll have a place in your heart for this old-fashioned cigar.
